Project Description

As part of its flood-affected community relief program, Rotary Club of Chitwan installed and handed over a 20,000-watt solar power system on 16th September 2026 (31 Bhadra 2083) at the Shunakheti Lift Drinking Water and Irrigation Project in Wards No. 8 and 9 of Bidur Municipality, Nuwakot, which was damaged by the Bhotekoshi flood.
The solar system was installed to restore the operation of the lift pumping system, which had been functioning only partially due to electricity shortages. Following the installation, the system can operate more reliably using solar energy, enabling the regular supply of drinking water and irrigation water to the local community. Approximately 300 households, Trishuli Provincial Hospital, three community schools, and five community-based holding centres are expected to benefit directly from the project. The improved water supply will help households access safe and reliable water for drinking and daily sanitation, while farmers will benefit from more dependable irrigation for agricultural activities and food production especially after flood they can earn by farming cash crops & livestocks. The availability of regular water will also support improved hygiene and sanitation in schools. For Trishuli Provincial Hospital, a more reliable water supply will contribute to maintaining essential sanitation and patient-care services. The solar system will also reduce dependence on conventional electricity, helping lower operating costs and providing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solution.
The project was implemented with technical and management support from Rotary Club of Chitwan & from Man Bahadur Tamang, residing in Australia, and cooperation from Bidur Municipality. During the handover program, Rotary Club of Chitwan President Rtn. Gehendra Man Shrestha formally handed over the solar system to the User Committee. The initiative provides immediate support to a flood-affected community while contributing to the long-term restoration of essential infrastructure and improving access to water, irrigation, health, education, sanitation, and sustainable energy.
