Project Description
Project Description: Cardiac Screening Program for School Children
This project aims to identify previously undiagnosed cardiac abnormalities among school children to enable early prevention of life threatening complications and timely treatment. The specific objectives include detecting Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), and acquired heart conditions through structured clinical examinations; referring suspected cases for echocardiography; providing medical or surgical support to diagnosed students; raising awareness among students, teachers, and parents; and maintaining systematic documentation for follow up and reporting.
Key activities involve organizing screening camps in schools with a multidisciplinary team comprising cardiologists, physicians, nurses, health assistants, data recorders, and volunteers. Preparations include securing administrative approvals, setting up screening halls and echocardiography rooms, orienting volunteers, and ensuring privacy and gender sensitivity during examinations. Screening procedures cover auscultation, identification of suspected cases, re evaluation by cardiologists, echocardiography, and confidential communication of findings to parents and guardians. Treatment support, referrals, and medication distribution will be provided as necessary.
Expected outcomes include early detection and management of cardiac diseases, improved awareness of heart health among school communities, strengthened collaboration between schools and health organizations, and comprehensive reporting to the Nepal Heart Foundation. Ultimately, the program will safeguard children’s health and reduce future cardiac risks.
Screening and Treatment Summary:
Out of a total of 350 students, 47 students underwent cardiac screening, and all 47 were further evaluated through echocardiography. Among them, one 16 year old student was diagnosed as requiring immediate medical attention.
In addition, 303 students received dental screening, with many provided general treatment, including tooth extractions where necessary.
